Visio by DPTPB: NetApp FAS/AFF Controller Stencil (V2)

Apr 24, 2017 Visio by DPTPB release update notes

Updated NetApp FAS / AFF DPTPB Visio stencils to follow V2 design where all data is within top-level shape and rear view shapes have connection points for rack placement

Stencil

  • DPTPB-NetApp-Controllers-Stencil-<DD-MM_YYYY>

Source of original shapes:

Front view DPTPB Visio shapes for NetApp FAS / AFF models

Current generation

  • FAS2620
  • FAS2650
  • FAS8200
  • FAS9000
  • AFF A200
  • AFF A300
  • AFF A700s
  • AFF A700

Previous generation

  • FAS2520HA
  • FAS2552HA
  • FAS2554HA
  • FAS/AFF8020HA
  • FAS/AFF8040HA
  • FAS/AFF8060HA
  • FAS/AFF8080HA (Single Chassis – Dual Controller)
  • FAS/AFF8080EX (Single Chassis -Single Controller)

Shape Label

Each front view shape is labeled with

  • Controller model
  • Node number
  • Node name
  • Additionally Metrocluster capable models have additional label field
    • Site-Name

Label text is linked to shape data and should not be directly edited, instead just click shape and data will be available in Visio “Shape Data” window.

With V2 version of shape all data is within top-level shape.  V2 design makes shape maintenance easier as no data is used from the original vendor shapes and they don’t require any changes.

V1 shapes used data associated with the original shape and each shape required additional data fields and editing before they worked with other DPTPB Visio shapes.

Variants

All FAS / AFF model DPTPB shapes are by default HA pairs with two controllers per chassis (HA / DC). Additionally for MetroCluster capable models there are single controller (SC) variants.

Rear view DPTPB Visio shapes for NetApp FAS / AFF models

  • Same NetApp models as Front View Shapes
  • V2 DPTPB rear view shapes come with connection point to match connection points in rear view rack shapes
  • Grouping box fill has 50% transparency in order to show grid
  • All ports are connection points where cables “snap&glue”
  • Controller Type , Node names and Node numbers are modifiable in Shape Data
    • Click shape in order to display Shape Data

FAS25xx / FAS26xx / AFF A300 models:

  • Additional fields to original NetApp shape:
    • controller type
    • model
    • node number
    • node name
  • These controllers can have internal disks
  • Additional Data associated with shape:
    • Shelf ID
    • Number of Disks (HDD)
    • Disk Size (HDD)
    • Number of Disks (SSD)
    • Disk Size (SSD)
    • Disk ownership model
      • Only one SAS stack, so disk ownership is either
        • disk-based (Mix-Disk)
        • shelf-based (Mix-Shelf)
  • Changes in Shape data for these properties will be displayed in shape label
  • Ports with 25xx series run at weird order
    • 0b,0a,e0c|0c,e0d|0d,e0e|0e,e0f|0f,e0a,e0b
    • 0b = Square port, 0a = Circle Port

FAS80x0 / FAS8200 / AFF A300

Additional fields to original NetApp shape:

  • controller type
  • model
  • node number
  • node name
  • Site Name (for Metroclusters)

Notes on 8000 series controllers:

  • 8020 model has one 4-port SAS-adapter in slot 1
  • 8040&8060 models have two 4-port SAS-adapters in slots 3&4
  • 8080EX model have three 4-port SAS-adapters in slots 3&5&9
  • Dual controller chassis shapes
    • In non-metrocluster setups controllers are typically deployed in HA-pairs
  • Single controller chassis shapes
    • 2-Node Metroclusters
  • Ports&Slots are labeled, but with very small font, use 1600% zoom to view
    • In Visio you can zoom to 1600% and above, Powerpoint seems to zoom max 400%
  • Ports on FAS8000 motherboard run from left to right (0a,0b,0c,0d and so on)

Similar properties as FAS8000 series as there are no internal disks

Additional fields to original NetApp shape:

  • controller type
    • Both are using the same shape, change between FAS9000 and AFF A700 by using “shape data” window
  • model
  • node number
  • node name
  • Site Name (for Metroclusters)

Notes on FAS9000 / AFF A700 series controllers:

  • Uses different adapter cards than FAS8000 series, use NetApp original stencils for adapter cards
